OUR SOCIAL IMPACT
Valcare, Cape Town
The value of stimulating care in young children is reflected by the fact that the poverty reduction strategies of the World Bank begin with early childhood development initiatives. Linked to the Group’s prioritisation of education and health, Kawari’s SEDdonation supports a carefully constructed early childhood development curriculum for children up to the age of six years old. The programme offers the necessary resources for children’s growth in their early lives, as well as parent support and educational support.
Eersterust Care and Training Centre (EACH), Eersterust
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has noted that people with disabilities often face significant barriers to accessing education and healthcare, placing them ‘at risk of economic isolation with no prospect of securing employment’.EACH provides specialised care and training for children, youth, and adults with disabilities, maximising their independence within the protective centre and developing their skills.
Khayalami Independent School, President Park AH, Midrand
Kawari is investing in the future of learners of Khayalami Independent School with the gift that keeps on giving for a lifetime – a refurbished library holding the answers to countless questions and stimulating the imagination of young enquiring minds. The donation has also been used to revamp a classroom and for purchasing desks and chairs that are crucial for learning.
Aurora Special Care Centre, Gqeberha
Children with severe childhood diseases and profound disability often require resource-intensive 24-hour care.Caring for the most vulnerable in our society is part of our shared humanity and reflects our roots in healthcare through showing support for those who rely on assistance in underserved communities.
100 Abc, Sunnyside, Tshwane
Empowering young women has been demonstrated to yield wider benefits to society as a whole. Internationally, it has been shown that when more women have employment there is a significant benefit to the overall economy, and where more women are economically active, this can help to speed up development and contribute to sustainability. Our SED support for 100 Abc helps provide an education fund and stipend for girls embarking on their high school journey, providing support that will allow them to focus on their education and the opportunities it brings.
PEACE Foundation
Walking long distances to school is a major barrier to education in many rural communities. Our SED initiative with #BIKES4ERP contributes of a fleet of bicycles for school children identified by the Barokologadi community in the North West as part of a holistic strategy of targeted rural poverty alleviation. Paving the way to education in this way has shown an improvement in learners’ marks by up to 15% and improved school pass rates significantly.
Sibongile Day Care Centre, Ga-Rankuwa
The community of Ga-Rankuwa’s children attending the day care centre will reap the future rewards of early childhood development from the stimulation they receive in their formative years. The SED funding is helping to provide learning resources, educational toys, office equipment and some structural materials for the school, keeping this beacon of hope alive for the next generation.
Wings of Inspiration Care Centre, KwaMhlanga
Access to early childhood development directly correlates with future earning potential and breaking the cycle of poverty. Our sponsorship is directed to the Centre’s nursery school for children under the age of six in KwaMhlanga. Aimed at giving children the developmental and educational preparation they need before starting primary school, the play school also feeds the children two meals a day, plus snacks, to ensure a nutritious diet.
Valcare, Cape Town
The high rate of youth unemployment is one of the most crippling barriers to our nation’s prosperity. Through the Valcare network, our donation is providing hospitality, soft skills, and leadership training for 20 disadvantaged youth beneficiaries. Upskilling young people in this key growth sector of the economy, with broad relevance and application in other industries, will help to secure a brighter future for them while helping to create more opportunities in local communities linked to tourism.
Resthaven, Rosettenville
Twenty-five children full of potential will benefit from our SEDcontribution to three homes providing for the needs of HIV orphans and abandoned children. A second-hand bus was purchased, renovated, and registered to provide school transport for the Resthaven children, as well as a donation towards the children’s educational needs, including stationery, school uniforms, shoes and tablets for schoolwork thereby ensuring the children are better equipped for the future. Clothes and toys were also acquired to bring joy and comfort to the little ones.
House of Lesedi, Hartbeespoort
A place of safety caring for orphaned, maltreated, and abused children, House of Lesedi relies on donations for household essentials to continue its vital work. Medipost’s SEDdonation is helping to cover the beneficiaries’ needs, including nappies, age-appropriate nourishment, and cleaning materials for the house.
Circle of Life, Mamelodi
The Circle of Life is an NPO which is focused on providing support for individuals and families affected by HIV/Aids. Recently this organisation started a programme assisting children and youth with aftercare including a space for homework, sport, arts, and crafts to nurture academic and physical abilities as well as creativity.
Children on the Move, Atteridgeville
Without proper nutrition, children cannot develop to their full potential physically or cognitively, yet many families struggle to afford to put food on the table. The donation to Children on the Move NPO went towards soup kitchens feeding orphans and vulnerable children. The children are fed daily with prepared solid meals at local ‘drop-in centres’ and provided with packed lunch boxes which are eaten at school. They are also provided with monthly food supplies via Shoprite groceries vouchers.
